Early on in history, Ura was sparsely populated and small towns and settlements were peppered throughout the land. As people settled, they began to explore their surrounding areas, and many times these travelers discovered other towns and people. In areas where these meetings where cordial, informal trade routes would be established. At first, trade was heavily based on barter; people exchanging equal amounts of goods, services or labor. As time went on, however, these small trade clusters developed their own independent currencies. Gradually, these local currencies replaced bartering and gave rise to powerful trade guilds. These guilds provided much wealth for small areas as well as protection, but they also constantly strove for more power. This led to countless battles and strife between guilds.
When Jemmos rose to power and organized Ura into the four regions, he realized that the local currencies were preventing more widespread and lucrative trade opportunities throughout the whole of Ura and also caused unnecessary conflict. When considering new ideas for a single currency used throughout Ura, he faced many complicated issues. What could this money be based on that would be equally valuable to everyone in Ura? Also, how would the people respond to removing their customary currencies and replacing it with something new?
That’s when Galadrian Hercule Henix showed up. Galadrian was the head of a major merchant guild in Rubrum called the Community of Henix. He had heard that the popular Uran leader was having a problem developing a single currency and he had come up with a great solution: the Henix. This small, clay-based coin would have redeemable value for the various local currencies. This would allow people to use a unified currency while still being able to exchange the Henix for their local currency if they so wished.
Jemmos immediately realized the ingenuity of the Henix and began work on it immediately. Just 10 years later, the Henix was being distributed throughout Ura through Exchange Offices placed in all major cities as well as many strategic points throughout Ura. The Henix gained immense popularity for decades and major trade routes began to take hold.
The Henix has proven especially valuable as trade between different regions (and now different governments) was still possible. That being said, some people today still only trade in local currencies, which keeps the Exchange Offices running to this day.
